Bailey's Almost 1st Time Spelunking || Wednesday, July 11, 2007

Today, since it was rainy, we thought it would be a good day to head up to Cades Cove to take the family to Gregory Cave to hunt for salamanders, thinking the rain would keep tourists at bay for a little while (ha... it didn't work). We saddled up with Myers in the backpack carrier and Bailey, Jodie, Myers, and I headed off. Once we got there, Bailey started to panic because, well, its a cave. As we finally got her coaxed into going into the cave, we pulled out the trusty flashlight that I had tested immediately before leaving the house and, surprise, it was dead. So we didn't get her in this time (about halfway around the cove we discovered that there was an extra headlamp in the trunk of the car... who knew?)

At the Abrams Falls trailhead we stopped at the sinkhole to turn over rocks and logs looking for salamanders, but we didn't have any luck there either. For once, we weren't rewarded for getting off the beaten path. All of our animal sightings came directly from the loop road: 1 bear, 13 deer (including an impressive looking buck), 7 turkeys, and a garter snake.

26 days till Bailey starts school; 40 days till I start back.
